Privacy Notice
Effective date: July 16, 2026 | Last updated: July 16, 2026
Turntable Labs, Inc. ("Turntable Labs," "TTFM," "we," "us," or "our") operates hangout.fm, a social music streaming service. This Privacy Notice explains what personal information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. This Privacy Notice is part of our Terms of Service.
Service availability. Hangout.fm is offered only within the United States. We do not intentionally offer or market the Service to residents of the European Union, the United Kingdom, or any other jurisdiction outside the U.S. Access from outside the U.S. is technically restricted (IP geo-blocking, U.S.-only payment processing, U.S.-only App Store and Google Play distribution). If you are outside the United States, please do not use the Service.
By using hangout.fm, you agree to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information as described in this Privacy Notice. If you do not agree, please do not use hangout.fm.
1. Personal information we collect
We collect personal information you provide to us, information that is generated automatically when you use hangout.fm, and information we receive from third parties (such as your connected music service).
1.1 Information you provide
- Account information: email address, password (hashed), optional phone number (for account recovery), a unique account identifier we assign.
- Profile information: stage name, avatar selection, color preference, and — optionally — your first and last name, birthday, country, and postal code. Some of these fields are displayed on your public profile; others are held privately and used only to personalize your experience (e.g., suggesting nearby hangouts).
- Social media handles: if you choose to add them, your handles for Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, Twitch, or YouTube. These are displayed on your profile.
- Payment information: for paid subscriptions, your billing address, cardholder name, and tokenized card information. Card details are handled by our payment processor (Stripe) and are not stored on our servers.
- Support and communication information: information you provide when you contact us (help@hangout.fm, discounts@hangout.fm, or the in-app "Report an Issue" form), including message content and attachments.
1.2 Information from your connected music service
To use hangout.fm, you must connect a Spotify Premium, Apple Music, or SoundCloud account. When you do, we receive information from that service, which may include:
- Your music service user identifier and, in some cases, the email address on that account.
- Your display name and profile picture (if available).
- OAuth authorization tokens that allow us to control playback on your behalf. We store these tokens on our servers so playback can continue across sessions.
- Metadata about the tracks you play, pause, skip, and add to queues while using hangout.fm.
Spotify AB, Apple Inc., and SoundCloud Inc. each remain independent controllers of the underlying accounts you hold with them. Their privacy policies govern their processing.
1.3 Information collected automatically
- Device information: device type, operating system, browser, application version, and unique device identifiers.
- Log information: IP address, request timestamps, pages or screens viewed, referring / exit pages, actions taken within the Service.
- Cookies and similar technologies: see Section 5 (Cookies).
- Interaction information: hangouts you visit and create, songs you play or queue, "Vibe Meter" thumbs-up / thumbs-down feedback, and other actions within the Service.
1.4 Information we do NOT collect
Contrary to older versions of our Privacy Policy, we do NOT currently:
- Track your precise (GPS) location, Wi-Fi network data, or Bluetooth data. We only ask for country and postal code, and only if you choose to provide them.
- Collect gender expression or sexual orientation as separate profile fields.
- Serve targeted advertising within the Service. hangout.fm is supported by subscription revenue only.
2. How we use your personal information
We use your personal information for the following purposes:
- Provide the Service: authenticate you, control music playback on your behalf via your connected music service, host hangouts, deliver chat and social features, process payments.
- Personalize your experience: suggest local hangouts based on your country/postal code, surface popular hangouts, and provide recommendations.
- Communicate with you: send transactional emails (account, payment, security), respond to your support inquiries, and — with your consent — send marketing communications.
- Improve the Service: analyze usage patterns via product analytics (Amplitude) and error monitoring (Sentry) to understand how features are used and to fix bugs.
- Report royalties to music rights holders: calculate and share aggregated streaming data with music labels, publishers, and performance rights organizations as required by our licensing agreements.
- Ensure security and prevent fraud: monitor for unauthorized access, abuse of the Service, and payment fraud.
- Comply with legal obligations: including tax record retention, responding to lawful subpoenas, and honoring Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notices.
3. How we share your personal information
We do not sell your personal information for monetary consideration. In the following limited circumstances, we share personal information with third parties:
3.1 Service providers
We rely on third-party service providers to operate hangout.fm. These providers process personal information on our behalf, under contractual restrictions, and only for the purposes we specify. Current service providers include:
- Amazon Web Services (hosting, storage, email delivery)
- Stripe, Inc. (payment processing)
- Amplitude, Inc. (product analytics)
- Sentry (error monitoring)
- Cloudflare, Inc. (content delivery and security)
3.2 Music services
When you connect Spotify Premium, Apple Music, or SoundCloud, we exchange authorization tokens and playback data with the connected service to provide music playback in hangouts. See Section 1.2.
3.3 Music rights holders
We report aggregated streaming activity to music labels, publishers, and performance rights organizations (including Sony, Warner, Universal, Merlin, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and others) as required by our licensing agreements. In most cases, this reporting does not include direct personal identifiers, but some societies require pseudonymized per-play data. See Section 6 for how this affects account deletion.
3.4 Business transfers
In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, sale of assets, or similar transaction, personal information may be transferred to a successor entity. Turntable Labs, Inc. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of GRAI, Inc. in June 2026; Turntable Labs continues to operate hangout.fm and remains the data controller for your personal information. No personal information of hangout.fm users is currently transferred to GRAI, Inc. as a separate operational activity.
3.5 Legal reasons
We may disclose personal information when required by law, subpoena, court order, or when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to (a) comply with a legal obligation, (b) protect our rights or property, (c) prevent fraud or abuse, or (d) protect the safety of our users or the public.
3.6 Other users
Your public profile (stage name, avatar, and any social media handles you add) is visible to other users. Your activity in a hangout (such as songs you queue, chat messages you send, and Vibe Meter reactions) is visible to other participants of that hangout.
4. Your choices and rights
4.1 Access, correction, deletion
You can view and edit most of your profile information directly in Manage Account settings. You can delete your account at any time via Manage Account → Danger Zone → Delete my account. See our Data Subject Rights Policy for a full description of your rights and how to exercise them.
4.2 California residents
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act ("CCPA/CPRA"), gives you specific rights regarding your personal information:
- The right to know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, and "share" (as defined by CCPA).
- The right to request deletion of personal information we hold about you.
- The right to correct inaccurate personal information.
- The right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. (We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined by CCPA. If this changes, we will provide a clear opt-out mechanism.)
- The right to limit use of Sensitive Personal Information (if we collect any).
- The right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights.
To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@hangout.fm. We will respond within 45 days of receiving a verifiable request. You may authorize an agent to submit a request on your behalf.
4.3 Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signal as an opt-out of "sale" and "sharing" under CCPA. We do not currently respond to "Do Not Track" (DNT) browser signals.
4.4 Marketing communications
You may opt out of marketing emails at any time by following the "unsubscribe" instructions in the email or by contacting us at privacy@hangout.fm. Even after opting out, you will still receive transactional emails about your account.
4.5 Music service disconnect
You may disconnect Spotify, Apple Music, or SoundCloud from your hangout.fm account at any time via account settings. You may also revoke access directly through the music service (e.g., spotify.com/account/apps, appleid.apple.com). Note that hangout.fm requires at least one connected music service to function.
5. Cookies and similar technologies
We and our service providers use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies to operate hangout.fm, understand usage, and remember your preferences. Categories include:
- Strictly necessary: authentication, session management, security (cannot be disabled without breaking the Service).
- Functional: preference storage (e.g., audio volume, hangout history).
- Analytics: usage measurement via Amplitude.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling strictly-necessary cookies will prevent hangout.fm from working properly.
6. How long we keep your information
We keep personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Notice, or as required by law. Key retention rules:
- Account information: for the life of your account. When you delete your account, most personal information is permanently deleted within 30 days.
- Payment records: retained approximately 7 years for U.S. tax and audit compliance.
- Aggregated streaming activity used for royalty reporting: retained for periods required by our music licensing agreements (typically 3–7 years). We pseudonymize user identifiers in these records when your account is deleted.
- Support tickets: 12 months after resolution.
- Backups: rotated on schedule (typically 30–90 days). Deleted data may persist in backups until the backup rotation replaces it.
For details, see our Retention Policy.
7. Security
We implement commercially reasonable technical, administrative, and organizational safeguards to protect personal information, including encryption in transit (TLS) and encryption at rest (AWS KMS) for our primary datastores. No online service is 100 percent secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we experience a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.
8. Children
hangout.fm is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a user is under 13, we will terminate the account and delete the associated personal information. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, contact us at privacy@hangout.fm.
9. Changes to this Privacy Notice
We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. When we make material changes, we will post the updated Notice on this page and, where appropriate, notify you by email or in-app notification. Your continued use of hangout.fm after the effective date of the updated Notice constitutes your acceptance of the changes.
